August is Black Business Month recognizing Black entrepreneurs’ contributions to the economy. In 1969 Frederick Johnson began his company, F.E. Johnson & Associates. Mr. Johnson had difficulty obtaining capital for his business. Eventually, he found success despite the hurdles he had to overcome.
In 2004 Mr. Johnson partnered with John Templeton to create Black Business Month. His goal was to garner more revenue for Black businesses.
Unfortunately what Mr. Johnson experienced in 1969 is still true today. For most Black entrepreneurs obtaining capital is difficult. Organizations like the Americans Alliance for Equal Rights led by Edward Blum have stopped the Fearless Fund from granting funds to Black women entrepreneurs. America First Legal sued Hello Alice for offering minority business grants.
Now more than ever Black entrepreneurship is under attack. However, you as an individual have the choice to spend your money wherever you desire so be intentional in supporting Black-owned businesses.
